'VFS Thesaurus'

'VFS Thesaurus' is a freeware program with single document interface (SDI). It is a simple table editor with unlimited undo for the files with extension ".THESA" (see an example below).

'VFS Thesaurus' is intended to be useful for simple insertion of frequently repeating words or phrases to the document in master transcriber application.

'VFS Thesaurus' document consists of records called billets. Each billet has a type ("Person", "Event", "Bookmark" and "Text") and an arbitrary text. Billet type is intended for convenient records grouping. Billets are always sorted. In stand alone mode records are sorted alphabetically. In passive mode records are sorted first by 'Last Insert Time' (last inserted records appear first) and then alphabetically.

The following table lists billet types and corresponding icons.

Icon Billet Type
'Text' billet type icon. Text
'Person' billet type icon. Person
'Event' billet type icon. Event
'Bookmark' billet type icon. Boookmark

Bookmarks have the same types as billets.

In passive mode, when 'VFS Thesaurus' runs as a counterpart of the master transcriber application, it acts as a dictionary and allows to insert any record to the master transcriber application document. In this mode 'Exit' command is replaced with 'Hide'. Only the master transcriber application is responsible for launching and exiting the Thesaurus application in passive mode.

All VFS transcribers (WordpadT, MediaPad, Subtitler and Microsoft Word Transcriber plugin) are master transcriber applications and can use 'VFS Thesaurus' in passive mode.

If a new instance of Thesaurus is running or one of the running instances is restoring, then other instances are minimized. Therefore only one running instance of the Thesaurus application is visible on the screen.

Main Window

Here is how VFS Thesaurus main window looks like in stand alone mode. Other main window images are on the screenshot page.

The name of the master transcriber application is displayed in the window title.

File .THESA (XML)

Dialog 'File Properties'

'File Properties' dialog is responsible for editing two optional file properties - "Description" and "Author".

Here is how 'File Properties' dialog looks like:

'File Properties' dialog. 'File Properties' dialog.

Dialog 'Edit Billet'

Each billet has a type ("Person", "Event", "Bookmark" and "Text") and contains an arbitrary text. Billet type is switched by a set of radio buttons and is displayed in the window title.

Here is how 'Edit Billet' dialog looks like:

'New Billet' dialog. 'New Billet' dialog.
'Edit Billet' dialog. 'Edit Billet' dialog.

Dialog 'Settings'

Dialog 'Settings' allows user to tune some program features.

Stand Alone Mode

The 'Settings' dialog in stand alone mode looks like this:

'Settings' dialog in stand alone mode. The 'Settings' dialog in stand alone mode.

The controls form 4 groups: "Common", "Confirm Action", "Startup & Exit" and "Timer (passive mode only)".

The "Common" group contains check boxes for 'Tooltips' and 'Minimize to Tray'. The 'Double Click Edit' check box in standalone mode is dimmed.

The "Confirm Action" group contains check boxes for 'Exit', 'Delete' and 'Save' operations. If some operation's check box is checked then the application prompts user whether to perform corresponding operation or not. If box is unchecked then the corresponding operation is performed silently.

The "Startup & Exit" group contains check boxes for startup and exit preferences. 'Save Position' flags force the program to save the window and dialog positions on exit and restore them on startup. The "Open Last File on Startup" check box controls automatic opening of the document that was opened at last exit.

Click the "Restore Defaults" button to restore the default values for all controls.

Passive Mode

The 'Settings' dialog in passive mode looks like this:

'Settings' dialog in passive mode.

The 'Settings' dialog in passive mode.

If 'Double Click Edit' check box is unchecked, then double click acts as 'Edit\Insert' command.

In passive mode dummy timer is available which is intended to replace real playback timer in cases when real media goes on external device like TV. The 'Continue from Previous' check box controls the timer behaviour after Pause and Play commands. The 'Start from Time' control sets the start time for the dummy timer.

'Always insert media link' setting is responsible for the inserted record format. This setting has no effect on Subtitler. If checked then the media link is always inserted (if media file is not set, then "_DUMMY_MEDIA_" text is inserted instead, assuming that real media file name will be inserted later). If unchecked then unformatted billet text is inserted "as is".

'Display last insert time' check box is responsible for extra column in the main window list view.

Click the "Restore Defaults" button to restore the default values for all controls.

VFS Thesaurus iconDialog 'About'

The 'About' dialog displays program information, version and copyright. In passive mode the dialog displays master transcriber application information as well.

Note, that second icon belongs to the master transcriber application.
