All transcribers and Subtitler provide virtually the same options (playback control, media labels, bookmarks and thesaurus support). All options are represented with two identical toolbars and some main menu commands located in 'Transcriber', 'Playback'and 'Media Links' menus.

Here is how menu 'Transcriber',  'Playback' and 'Media Links' look like.

Menu 'Transcriber'.

Menu 'Transcriber' provides "Play", "Pause" and "Stop" commands as well as "Rollback", "Step Back", "Step Forward" and "Go To Position" commands.

The "Settings" dialog is here as well.

 

Menu 'Playback'.

Menu 'Playback' provides basic sound control commands, it controls "Mute", "Volume", "Rate" and "Loop".

Menu 'Media Links' in WordPardT.

Menu 'Media Links' provides commands for working and navigating with media links as well as bookmarks.

Controlling Visibility

'Show/Hide Player' icon.VFS Player

Select menu item "View\Show Player Window" or just press 'F2' key to show/hide VFS Player window.

'Show/Hide Thesaurus' icon.Thesaurus

Select menu item "View\Thesaurus" to show/hide VFS Thesaurus window.

Every transcriber application has its own Thesaurus (launched in passive mode). Besides some Thesaurus applications could be launched in active (stand alone) mode. Keep in mind that once one passive Thesaurus window is shown, then other Thesaurus windows will be hidden automatically.

'Show/Hide Log Window' icon.Log Window

Every transcriber application has its own Log window which is responsible for log and error messages. When something goes wrong, check the log window first.

Select menu item "View\Show Log" to show/hide the application log window.

On some events (such as disconnection) the Log window is shown automatically.

 


Working and Navigating with Media Links

'Insert Medai Link' icon.Inserting Media Link

To insert the media link select menu item "Media Links\Insert" or press the button 'Insert Medai Link' icon."Insert media link" during playback. The media link with reference to the current media file position (taking into account the delay interval - see 'Insert Delay [s]' field on custom 'Settings' page) will be automatically inserted into the current text position. The media link look depends on the transcriber application (plain text in MediaPad and Subtitler, formatted text in WordPadT and Microsoft Word).

To change the media link insert delay interval use the "Settings" dialog.

 

'Delete Media Link' icon.Deleting Media Link or all Media Links

To delete the media link set the caret inside the selected media link and press the button 'Delete Media Link' icon. "Delete media link". The selected media link will be deleted.

To delete all media links in the document set the caret outside media links and press the button  'Delete Media Link' icon."Delete media link". The following dialog will appear:

Check the required options and press the "OK" button. After user confirmation all media links (and media link text, if checked) in the document will be deleted.

 

'Show/Hide Media Links' icon.Show/Hide Media Links

This command assumes text formatting and is available in WordfPadT and Microsoft Word Transcriber Plugin only.

To hide all media links in the document press the button  'Show/Hide Media Links' icon."Show/Hide media links". The button becomes checked and all media links in the document will be hidden. To show the media links press the button  'Show/Hide Media Links' icon."Show/Hide media links" again.

Hint

Font attribute "Hidden" is used to hide media links in Microsoft Word. If Microsoft Word "Display hidden text" mode is on, then you can see hidden media links. To really hide media links turn the "Display hidden text" mode off (Use Dialog "Tools\Options", tab "View" check box "Hidden text").

 

'Format Media Links' icon.Formatting Media Links

This command assumes text formatting and is available in WordfPadT and Microsoft Word Transcriber Plugin only.

To format all media links in the document press the button  'Format Media Links' icon."Format Media Links" or select menu item "Media Links\Format". The document text will be scanned and analyzed and all media links will be properly formatted.

For example, consider pasting unformatted text with media links from MediaPad document to Microsoft Word document.

 

Dialog 'Navigation' icon.Dialog 'Navigation (Media Links)'

To display all media links in the current document press the Dialog 'Navigation' icon."Navigation" button . Dialog "Navigation" looks like this

All media links from the current document are collected and listed in the table.

Go To any media link

Select the media link from the list and press the "GoTo" button. The caret will move to the selected media link in the document.

Playback from any media link

Select the media link from the list and press the "Playback" button. The caret will move to the selected media link and playback will start from the media link’s media file position.

To go to the next or to the previous media link press the 'Go to the next Media Link' icon."Go to next media link" button  or the 'Go to the previous Media Link' icon."Go to previous media link" button  respectively. The caret will move to the next or to the previous media link in the current document.

Playback from Next or Previous media link

To start playback from the next or from the previous media link press the "Go to next media link" button  or the "Go to previous media link" button respectively holding down the "Shift" key. The caret will move to the next or to the previous media link in the current document and (if VFS Player is connected) playback will start from the media link’s media file position.

 


Dialog 'Bookmarks' icon.Working with Bookmarks

All transcribers provide the same 'Bookmarks' and 'Add Bookmark' dialogs as VFS Player does.

 


Playback, Loop, Steps, Player State and Navigation

'Play from cursor position' icon.Playback from Current Text Position

To start playback from the current text position press the button  'Play from cursor position' icon."Playback from text position" or press the hot key "Ctrl+Space". The current text position with the help of the nearest media links will be transformed (precisely for media links or approximately by linear interpolation for any other place in the text document) to the media file position and playback will start from that position.

Playback from Bookmark

To start playback from a bookmark use 'Bookmarks' dialog.

Playback from Media Link

To start playback from a media link use 'Navigation' dialog.

Controlling Playback

'Loop' icon.Loop

To display the 'Loop' dialog select menu item "Playback\Loop" or press button 'Loop' icon."Loop". The 'Loop' Dialog allows to set the number of loop repetitions and to switch the Loop mode on and off. The 'Loop' dialog is common for all transcriber applications and is described here.

 

'Step Back' icon.Steps

Rollback is a special case of "Step back" command.

Dialog 'Go To Position' icon.Player State

Current Media File Name and Position are displayed in the Status Bar in the right bottom corner of transcriber application (WordPadT, MediaPad and Subtitler) main window as well as in the VFS Player main window. Status Bar looks like this. It displays player state, volume and rate levels, position and media file name.

Dialog 'Go To Position' icon.Navigation

The following table lists the available navigation commands.

To change current media file position select menu item "Transcriber\Go to Position" or press button Dialog 'Go To Position' icon."Go To Position". The following dialog will appear.

Both position controls 'Seconds' and 'hh:mm:ss' are syncronized. Use more suitable control for entering the required position. Then press 'Go' button.

 


Mute, Volume and Rate

Switching Mute On/Off

Icon Description
''Mute' mode On/Off' icon. Mute On (checked)/Off(unchecked)

To switch the sound off temporarily during playback press the "Mute" button ''Mute' mode On/Off' icon.. The playback will continue without sound.  To switch the sound on press the "Mute" button again. The playback will continue with sound.

 

Adjusting Volume

'Increase Volume' icon. Increase Volume

Click the "Increase volume" button 'Increase Volume' icon. to increase the volume level by the volume step. Click the "Decrease volume" button 'Decrease Volume' icon. to decrease the volume level by the volume step. The default volume step value is 10%. To change the volume step use the "Settings" dialog.

To set the normal volume level click the "Normal volume" button 'Normal Volume Level' icon.. The default normal volume level is 80%. To change the default normal volume level use the "Settings" dialog.

 

Adjusting Rate

Rate (playback speed, temp) can be adjusted from 0.5 (50%) to 2.0 (200%). Click the "Increase rate" button 'Increase Rate' icon. to increase the rate by the rate step. Press the "Decrease temp" button 'Decrease Rate' icon. to decrease the rate by the rate step. The default rate step is 10%. To change the rate step use the "Settings" dialog.

To set normal rate level (100%) click the "Normal temp" button 'Normal Rate' icon..
